My Funny Valentine

Miles and miles ahead,
with a piercing cry
from the gold horn.
Black face painted blue,
blue, and bloodied red.

                                                                                      From Lester Young
                                         A colored man,
                                         he liked soft things.

                                         Shoes, a gift,
                                         in the wastebasket.

                                         Shoes, hard
                                         soled.
